A slice of CMU history.

The Malt Shop has been a staple at Central Michigan University since December 1971. Located right on the edge of campus at 1088 South University Ave, it is a convenient spot for a quick lunch in between classes or for a late night bite after happy hour in downtown. While famous for their pizza and malted shakes, the Malt Shop also has sandwiches, salads, coney dogs, chips and cookies on the menu.
The Malt Shop has an exciting special for every day of the week. Mount Pleasant Mondays are for the locals with a dollar off any frozen treat. All you have to do is present your elementary, junior high or high school ID for the discount. Tuesdays offer a BOGO deal; when you buy one hot dog the second one is free. Wellness Wednesdays give customers one dollar off salad or sandwich combos. Throwback Thursdays roll back prices to relive the good old days. This includes one dollar hotdogs, two dollar slices of pizza and three dollar sub sandwiches. Fire Up Fridays are for CMU students and offer free mini cookies with a
purchase when customers presents their student ID.
While The Malt Shop has been in the Mount Pleasant community for over 40 years, it just reopened its doors this summer after a short hiatus for building renovations. Two brothers (and Mount Pleasant residents) Tim and Jim Otteman bought the shop from previous owners and worked to restore it to its former glory. The Malt Shop does an excellent job of paying tribute to the great history of Central Michigan University. Be sure to stop by and see it all for yourself next time you a craving a slice and a shake. And keep an eye out for the Malt Shop’s pizza mascot, Cheesy from the Peasy, running around on campus.
